A practical app revenue metric tree

Trace top-line app revenue to the product behaviours your team can actually influence.

Charts and notes used for business analysis

Revenue becomes useful when it can be traced to decisions. Start with net revenue, then separate subscriptions, in-app purchases and advertising. Each stream has different drivers and should not be forced into one funnel.

For subscriptions, connect active subscribers to new starts, renewals, reactivations and churn. For in-app purchases, separate payer conversion from purchase frequency and average transaction value. Ad revenue needs active users, ad opportunities, fill rate and effective revenue per thousand impressions.

Keep the tree small enough to discuss in one meeting. Every branch should have an owner, a consistent definition and a plausible action. A metric that cannot influence a decision is usually context, not a key performance indicator.

Put the view to work

Choose one decision the analysis should inform, document the metric definitions and review the result with the people who own the action. That short loop is more valuable than adding another unowned report.
